BASF introduces new optimized grade of Elastollan® TPU for safer and more reliable electric vehicle charging

On November 1, 2022, BASF launched Elastollan® thermoplastic polyurethane
(TPU) 1180A10WDM. This is a new grade specially optimized for fast charging pile charging cables, and the material is more flexible, so it is more flexible and easier to handle than traditional fast charging cables.

Marilyn Lye, Vice President of BASF Performance Materials Asia Pacific Industrial Products Business Management, said: “High-power charging piles have improved consumers’ electric vehicle charging experience and are therefore very popular in the market.
However, the large cables of fast chargers are stiff and easily damaged. New grades of polyurethane from BASF
(TPU) material is more flexible, has excellent mechanical properties, weather resistance and flame retardancy, and is compliant with EV charging cable standards*. ”

Consumers are extremely vulnerable when handling damaged charging cables. Charging cables are subject to wear and aging due to environmental factors, bending, dragging, and even crushing during use. With the new Elastollan
Charging cables made of 1180A10WDM characteristic material help enable safer and more reliable fast charging of electric vehicles.

In addition, the current Elastollan 1185A10FHF for standard charging cables is available and can be purchased directly from BASF’s Shanghai branch with short delivery times.
